Based in the slate belt of Gwynedd, Celf Llechen make modern decorative artistic pieces using traditional hand-working methods from local slate.
Dave Stephen has spent most of his life in the mountains, both for work and pleasure. He has a fascination with geology and rock and specifically slate. Ceri Roberts has a Product Design degree and has been working with slate and alongside Dave for the past five years.
Although slate is often thought of as a purely functional material, we hand pick our pieces in order to illustrate and celebrate the diversity; the colours and textures.
Working with slate is organic. The rock has its own ideas of what it will and won't do and that is part of the challenge. You have to work WITH the material.
Our inspiration comes from the stunning landscape of North Wales and the inherent beauty of the natural slate. Added to this is our awareness of the vast geological forces that created slate and the significance of the material in the history and culture of North Wales.
