Rhodri is a fourth generation farmer of Hafod-y-wern family farm, Penrhyndeudraeth comprising 100 acres of the Dwyryd coastal pasture and slate quay. The Dwyryd was a key river for the export of slate from Blaenau Ffestiniog to the port of Porthmadog.
Rhodri produces a unique lamb (Salt Marsh Lamb) that is flavoursome, lightly flavoured and delicately melt-in-your-mouth. It is a healthy omega 3-rich meat and very nutritious with lambs grazing on a combination of nutrient-rich and mineral-rich plants available on the inshore. You get full traceability of it being local meat.
This is land is really the saltmarsh ie the land must be completely covered by the sea daily for a period of at least a week every month due to natural tides and ebb. Rhodri is often seen collecting the lambs before the tide, always keeping an eye on the weather as strong tidal winds can be very dangerous for the flock.
The lambs are sold directly to the D G Davies Butchers Shop, Penrhyndeudraeth and Bodnant Food Centre. Llanrwst Conwy Valley Meat also supplies this special product to other Butchers throughout Wales, during the June to December season.
