Working in the conservation industry comes with a lot of responsibility, and we don’t take that responsibility lightly. We’re fortunate to travel throughout Wales and the Northwest of England working on beautiful churches and historic monuments, preserving the valuable heritage that surrounds these structures. A big part of that work is roofing repairs, and in the world of roofing materials there is one unquestionable rule - Welsh slate is still the best.
As outdoor enthusiasts, the stark contrast between the mountains and quarries always fascinated us, with general explorations of the slate landscape revealing the history which hides in every corner. I doubt any of us thought back then that in a few years we would be working not only hands on with the product these quarries produced, but actually in preserving the heritage of the quarries themselves.
Our small part in the ongoing renovations of the Cornish beam engine in Dorothea quarry was a great pleasure for us, and we look forward to seeing how these projects across the world heritage site progress. We strongly feel that it would be a loss not only to Wales, but to the world, if these monuments to the tenacity and ingenuity of the local populace were lost, and we are glad that this value has been acknowledged, so the work of preserving this landscape can continue with the proper care and guidance that it requires.
